Within a couple of minutes you can have your own portfolio of pics up and running that you can share with people and use to explore the work of other photographers on the site.
Besides making it very simple for people to upload photos, Flickr has also embraced tags so that users can give their pics descriptive keywords, which helps in two ways.
First it means people can easily track down photographs within their own account, but also see the pictures others have tagged with the same word.
Claire Sutton, whose This Perth Life is going from strength to strength, makes great use of Flickr to highlight the ocean views, towns and animals of Western Australia.
Her photos take you beyond the normal guidebook view of a destination and allows you to explore vineyards, beaches and the streets of Perth in a way that I'm sure will have past visitors say, 'I remember that'.
But what Claire has also realised is that her photographs also play an important part on This Perth Life, giving her the opportunity to take people to a location beyond the words that she writes.
And as Claire adds keywords to her pics, when people click through to her Flickr album they can take a browse around other related photos.
Hey Craig, thanks for the plug!
;-)
One other thing that I've used Flickr for is blogging other people's photo's.
For instance, Wolfe Creek Meteor site is a place that I haven't been to (it's at the other end of Western Australia and that's a LONG way!) but by blogging someone's else picture I've managed to show people what it's like rather than "just" write about it.
This is such a useful tool within Flickr that more people should take advantage of it.
